Play as Therapy: SPJ CJs bring laughter to 169 fire survivors

Laughter is often called the best medicine, and on February 1, 2026, it was the primary prescription for the students of Addition Hills Integrated School (AHIS).

As part of “Oplan RISE” (Relief, Intervention and Support for Emergencies), the Highway Hills Integrated School (HHIS) campus journalists led by Jiro Miranda traded their pens and cameras for whistles and microphones to lead a series of recreational games for 169 learners affected by the recent fire in Block 36.

The school grounds of AHIS, which had been clouded by the somber atmosphere of the tragedy since January 19, erupted in cheers. The student journalists organized parlor games such as Color Jump, Head,Shoulders, Knees, Toes, Cup and Hep Hep Hooray, designed not just for fun, but to rebuild a sense of community and normalcy among the victims.

“The goal was to foster empathy and provide a learner-centered environment even outside the four walls of the classroom,” Miranda said.

For many of the children, the games offered a rare moment of escape. Relay races and team challenges required them to hold hands and work together, reminding them that they have a support system to lean on.

While the distribution of hygiene kits and towels addressed their physical needs, the games addressed a different hunger—the need to just be a child again. As the event concluded, it was clear that while the fire had taken their homes, it had not taken their spirit.
