The Power of Play and Provision
Disaster relief is often pictured as a solemn handover of boxes—stoic faces and quiet lines. However, Hulo Integrated School’s recent “Oplan RISE” flipped the script, proving that true recovery requires a balance of provision and play.
The initiative successfully distributed material necessities—hygiene kits, blankets, and towels —to 69 fire victims. These “groceries” are vital for physical survival. But the organizers understood that a child’s needs go beyond soap and water.
By integrating recreational games into the program flow, the organizers addressed the psychological need for normalcy. The sight of student journalists playing tag and parlor games with the victims sent a powerful message: You are not just victims; you are children, and you deserve to smile.
This dual approach—filling bags with goods and filling hours with fun—is the gold standard for school-based community service. It upholds the objective to “foster empathy” and “support fellow learners” in the most holistic way possible.
We salute the SPJ teams for realizing that while blankets warm the body, it is laughter that warms the heart.
